Answer: ______
Answer Key
- 1. A — Some speakers are engineers, and every speaker arrived by train. So some engineers (the speaker ones) arrived by train. C overreaches: we only know about the speakers.
- 2. B — Day 29 is within 30 days and she had a receipt, so her return fit the policy. Nothing supports the stronger claims in the other choices.
- 3. B — Rain always means a closed field. The field is open, so it is not raining. Classic contrapositive.
- 4. C — The first claim says every honors student studies at least three hours, but Maya is an honors student who studies two. Both cannot be true.
- 5. A — This is a direct contrapositive. If all pros are at least 5'9", then anyone shorter cannot be a pro. Nothing else is forced.
- 6. C — The coins are in the vault and some vault items are loans. It is possible some coins are the loaned items, but nothing forces it. "May" is the safe word.
- 7. B — If every pre-noon proposal were approved, the 11:30 proposal would be approved. Since it was not, the "every" claim must have an exception.
- 8. C — If P then Q. Not Q. Therefore not P. The missed connection proves the train was late (at least under the stated rule).
- 9. B — Every bakery sourdough loaf is fresh. This loaf is not fresh, so it cannot be one of them. Simple contrapositive.
- 10. A — Some runners are veterans, and all veterans have run 26 miles. So some runners in this race have run 26 miles. Nothing more follows.
