What does a 120-139 LSAT score mean?

Scores in the 120s land in roughly the bottom tenth of all test takers. In our 196-school dataset, 195 of 196 schools have medians at or above 140.

Two tools for this score range: the score converter and the what-if chances tool, which shows how a few more points change your odds.

Percentile ranks are LSAC's official 2023-2026 testing years table ("percent below"). School-median counts come from our dataset of 196 ABA-approved schools (Fall 2025 entering-class medians via ABA 509 disclosures, compiled by ILRG). Both read October 12, 2026.

The percentile: 0th to 9th percentile

A score of 120-139 sits at the 0th to 9th percentile of all LSAT test takers. Percentile means the share of scores below yours, not the share of questions you got right. Near the top of the scale, a few points move you past a huge share of test takers. Near the middle, the same few points move you less.

What it means for admissions

A score below 140 is below the published median at nearly every ABA-approved school. Admission is very unlikely without a major score increase. This is the one band where retaking is almost always the right call, unless law school is genuinely off the table.

The honest rule that holds at every band: schools publish a 25th-75th percentile LSAT band for each entering class. Landing above a school's 75th percentile is the strongest position for both admission and scholarship money. Landing between the 25th and 75th keeps you competitive. Landing below the 25th means the rest of your application has to do heavy lifting.

How to move up from here

Start with a real diagnostic to find the gap, then build fundamentals untimed: argument structure in LR, passage mapping in RC. Students in this band often gain the most from the basics, because the early points come fastest.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get into law school with a 120-139 LSAT?

It is very unlikely at ABA-approved schools. Published medians sit far above this band. Retake after real prep, or reconsider the plan.

How much can I improve from here?

The early gains are usually the fastest, because fundamentals move scores quickly at this level. But plan on months of steady work, not weeks.
