Splitter-friendly law schools
A "splitter" is an applicant with a high LSAT and a low GPA. A splitter-friendly school is one where a strong LSAT can carry a weaker GPA. Below is a strict, mechanical screen of the data: schools with a median LSAT of 165 or higher and a median GPA of 3.75 or lower. That cutoff is our own heuristic, labeled as such. It is not an official designation, and no school calls itself splitter-friendly.

Schools that pass the screen
| Rank | School | City | Median LSAT | Median GPA | Est. annual tuition |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Washington and Lee University | Lexington, VA | 167 | 3.75 | $57,450 |
| 2 | University of California, Davis | Davis, CA | 165 | 3.70 | $69,705 nonresident / $57,460 in-state |
Why so few schools pass
The cutoff is strict on purpose. Schools with high LSAT medians usually have high GPA medians too; the two move together. Only schools where the LSAT median is high while the GPA median stays modest clear both bars. That rarity is the point: it tells you that a lopsided file is genuinely unusual, and that most schools will want both numbers. Do not read this short list as the only schools that will take a splitter. Read it as the schools whose published medians most resemble a splitter's file.
How to use medians as a splitter
Forget the label and do the math yourself. Find schools where your LSAT sits at or above the median while your GPA sits near or below theirs. That is where your score buys the most: the school wants your LSAT for its medians, and your GPA does less damage because the file is already lopsided in the direction they reward. Then check the money: schools that want your score are the same schools most likely to discount tuition for it. Read our scholarships guide before you assume the sticker price.
The honest caveats
Medians describe last year's class, not this year's decisions. A school can love splitters one cycle and fill up on high-GPA applicants the next. Splitters also face a real risk: some schools protect their GPA median as hard as their LSAT median. Apply broadly across the range your numbers suggest, and write the optional essays. A clear, brief explanation of a low GPA beats silence.
