What is median?

The median is the middle value when everything is lined up in order: half above, half below.

Unlike an average, it is not dragged around by outliers. One billionaire does not move the median income.

When a question gives you a median, ask what it hides: a median income says nothing about how far the top and bottom stretch.

Median and average together describe a distribution; either one alone can mislead.
