What is alternative explanation?
An alternative explanation is a different cause that accounts for the same evidence.
It is the single most useful answer pattern on weaken and flaw questions: the argument says X caused Y, and the right answer offers a Z that explains Y without X.
Train yourself to ask "what else could cause this?" before you read the choices.
The best alternative explanations use only facts already in the stimulus. They do not need new science.
