What is unless?

Unless introduces a necessary condition with a negation built in. A unless B means: if not B, then A.

The standard translation: whatever follows unless becomes the necessary condition, negated.

So you will not pass unless you study becomes: if you do not study, you will not pass. Then the contrapositive: if you pass, you studied.
