False Dilemma: Stadium or Bust
The flawed argument
A mayor argued: "Either we fund the new stadium or the team leaves town. We cannot lose the team, so we must fund the stadium."
Why it fails
The mayor presents two options as if they were the only ones. The team might stay without a stadium, the city could renovate the old one, or a private deal could emerge. When someone says "either/or," always ask what the third option is.
The answer
The flaw is a false dilemma: assuming only two options exist when others are possible.
